The message I sent to 30+ facebook friends about NC’s Amendment One
Hey guys!
So, I know some of you have already early-voted for the election on the 8th, but if you haven’t voted yet, I’d like to encourage to vote AGAINST Amendment One.
If you don’t know, the Amendment reads, in full “Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.”
As you can imagine, the Amendment’s purpose is to prevent North Carolina from ever legalizing gay marriage (aka marriage equality), or even from recognizing a same-sex married couple who move to NC from another state.
However, because the Amendment’s language is so short and vague, it could have unintended effects beyond marriage equality, such as: endanger the rights and benefits enjoyed by unmarried straight couples and their children, and impact domestic violence protections, since relationships other than “marriage” may no longer be legally recognized (this scenario already happened in Ohio when that state passed a similar Amendment).
But on a personal note, this Amendment also affect *me*, your friend and colleague. Beyond the fact that gay marriage is already not legal in North Carolina, I am deeply hurt and offended that the state where I have built my life for the past 6 years — where I have made life-long friendships — would consider me unworthy of EVER getting married in this state, or having the same rights as straight people.
I want to get married. I want to raise a child and teach them all the tough life-lessons that I’ve learned. I want to have a family who love and care for me as much as I love and care for them. I want to grow old with a man that I love so deeply that it hurts. But I don’t want to do any of that in a state that hates me so vehemently that it has written homophobia into its Constitution.
If this Amendment were to pass, it would force me, and many other LGBT friends I know, to reconsider whether North Carolina is where we really where we want to live.
So I encourage you, from the bottom of my heart, to vote AGAINST Amendment One.
thanks for reading!

Matt and I break down a few improv terms, talk a little bit about Del Close, have a long weird pause. He also tells me why I shouldn’t listen to Improv 4 Humans like I do… Shit. Go see Freak Dance.

Tumblr’s ideas for fired-up songs so far:
- We Will Rock You - Queen
- Don’t Stop Believing - Journey
- 2 Legit 2 Quit - M.C. Hammer
- 500 Miles - The Proclaimers
- Eye of the Tiger - Survivor
- All Star - Smash Mouth
- Valio la Pena - Marc Anthony
- That’s Good - Devo (A. writes that the suggestion is inspired by this video: “Literally the most excited anybody has been about anything EVER in the history of America. Look at them go! So much clapping! So much SPANDEX!”)
- “All of Kelly Clarkson’s songs. ALL OF THEM.”
I approve of all of this so hard.
Also: Don’t Stop Me Now, because you can’t have too much Freddie Mercury on a playlist like this.
Yes, also Marc Broussard’s cover of “Yes We Can, Can”, because of course.
