Best Buy announced that it will match the prices of online competitors like Amazon in order to attract more customers. This is huge for Best Buy, considering it has lost a significant amount of business to Amazon alone. With e-tailers like Amazon, customers can shop from the comfort at home, receive lower prices and quick delivery.

But Best Buy isn’t betting on price matching alone. It’s heating up the competition with free home delivery of products that are out-of-stock as well.

Best Buy Looks to Crush Amazon With Price Match | DailyTech

This is a big fucking deal.

Amazon Brings Its Videos to the iPad

cordcutter:

Finally. It’s here in the App Store. I’ve been using Amazon Instant Video more and more and recently added Amazon Prime. (I paid the $79 for Prime mostly for the free shipping, but it didn’t hurt that I also get a limited library of free media to stream.) I view all of this stuff on my TV through a Roku box, but it will be nice to also have the option of watching on my iPad.

The best feature of the new app is offline viewing, something I wish had for the flights I recently took across the country. (That would be an amazing feature for Netflix to offer, though I assume their content licenses prohibit it.) The app even syncs your viewing across devices like Kindle: start a movie on your big screen and pick it up where you left off on your iPad.

The biggest drawback to Amazon Instant Video for iPad, Peter Kafka notes, is that you can’t purchase new content, just view stuff you’ve already purchased or rented. Blame Apple for that.

SWEET JESUS YES

It’s been a long time since I bought a movie ‘New’ from Amazon

So I was impressed to discover that when I ordered two Harry Potter movies today, not only did I get a great deal, but I also got a free rental of each movie that will last until Christmas, meaning I can watch it right away, as many times as I like until the actual DVD arrives. That’s fuckin’ teamwork.

Editorial: How Amazon picked Android’s lock

nerdology:

Chris Ziegler nails it.

Amazon now stands poised to take one of Google’s most critical assets — Android — and turn it against them. Praise for the Fire’s deeply-customized version of Android 2.3 has been nearly universal, and make no mistake, there’s no going back; this is Amazon’s operating system now, built atop a road-tested core that Google served up free of charge.

The Kindle Fire will handle basic tasks onboard, then farm out work to Amazon’s cloud service.
All those years of work Amazon has done in e-retail and cloud computing — not to mention developing the Kindle in-house — is paying off for Jeff Bezos.

Verrrrry interesting.

Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos with the new Kindle Fire. (via Gizmodo)

I can’t remember where, but about a year ago I read an article that was all about the name “kindle” and how more attention should be paid to what that name implied. Namely, that it wasn’t the device itself that mattered so much as what the device would spark in the consumers who owned it in terms of customer loyalty when it comes to buying e-books. I think it’s safe to say that the fire is the progression of that concept and that whoever wrote that article should get a raise.
